It’s Paul’s birthday today (or at least that’s what Facebook tells me). Happy birthday, Paul! Here’s the cake I baked for him:
If I cared, I would edit out all the junk on my kitchen table (or I would just clean my kitchen table…). I would also bother to take pictures with my camera, not my cell phone. Hooray laziness!
I made the same cake for his birthday last year. It’s a brownie cake with Trader Joe’s No Guilt brownie mix (similar to my beloved No Pudge brownies), and in the middle of the two layers of brownie is a layer of raspberry jam (with a packet of SF raspberry Jell-o mixed into it for a little extra color/flavor). Then it’s topped off with some delicious chocolate frosting and another layer of the raspberry jam. Yummers. Can we skip dinner and just eat cake?
This was a pretty good week in terms of workouts (not quantity, but quality). I only made it to the gym 3 times this week. My parents were visiting yesterday, and I won’t make it tomorrow since I’m going home for the weekend.
Monday was my first day back to the gym in over a week and a half (I had no car over my spring break, which means I didn’t get to the gym). I was anticipating having a rough run, but in fact, I took 20 seconds off of my fastest mile (thanks for letting me know, Tiger Woods!).
Tuesday’s workout was the last workout I attempted before quitting C25k last summer. It said to run 8 minutes, walk 5, run 8. The last time I did this workout, I could have finished it easily, but I just decided I was bored with running and stopped. I was nervous I’d do the same thing, but I powered through and finished.
Today’s workout said to run for 20 minutes with no walking. Is it me, or does it seem like a big jump from Tuesday’s workout to today’s? I went to the gym not expecting much, but managed to make it through the whole 20 minutes (okay, I stopped and stood on the sides for 20 seconds, but I made up those 20 seconds at the end). Woo! I took my pace down .4, so I ran just under 2 miles straight. I’m quite proud of myself. Tiger was, too. He told me I took another 20 seconds off my fastest mile). To be honest…I was a little disappointed that I didn’t run faster, but that’s okay. There’s plenty of time to build speed. Right now it’s all about endurance.
I’m still nervous about taking the running outside on the pavement. I have just under a month to get myself ready for the 5k. I hope that moving to pavement isn’t going to set me back too much.
In other news (and still kind of milestone-related), I’ve actually been feeling “skinny” this week. This is a pretty big statement for me. Even with 30 pounds lost, I’ve never thought of myself as skinny. So, to actually see it in the mirror meant a lot for my self esteem. Maybe Paul’s on to something with this whole “Wearing clothes that fit you makes you look better” thing. 😉
I have officially accomplished everything I wanted to today, which is to say I slept in, weighed myself, and made coffee. Yup. Happy Saturday. We’ll hopefully be going to visit Paul’s grandparents this afternoon, too.
So, the weigh-in. I lost the 0.8 that I had gained last week, so I guess that’s good, considering I didn’t work out at all this week. My total weight loss this month was 3.5 lbs. Not too shabby. Just under an average of 1 pound a week.
Paul and I went out last night (GASP! A date!). We tried a restaurant down the street called Barley House. It’s an Irish-themed pub. I’ll admit: I indulged and had fish & chips (I had a really long meeting at work yesterday afternoon–it was either fried food or alcohol). Sadly, though, they were really not good. The fries were bland, and the fish tasted like they had just taken some fish sticks out of the freezer. Big disappointment. Not what either of us wanted to spend our money on, nor was it what I wanted to spend my calories on. Oh well. Live and learn. I really hate being disappointed in meals. Don’t you?
We stopped at Borders after dinner and I got a new WW recipe magazine. There are some really tasty looking things in it. I’m excited to try it out.
We also went to see No Strings Attached last night, too. It was a cute movie. You can totally predict what’s going to happen just based on the trailer, but it was good nonetheless.
I should actually get something accomplished today….laundry, eating, showering, something. Have a happy Saturday!
Paul and I got new phones/new phone numbers today. Our plan has texting and internet. Whoa. We’re cookin’ with gas now….
Also, just a note of CONGRATULATIONS to my friend Elena and her fiance, Adam! The lovely couple got engaged while in Ireland last week. So romantic! I’m beyond happy for you both!
Worked out the ol’ digits today. How, you ask? By signing all the papers to BUY A HOUSE. Yes, that’s right–Paul and I closed on our first house today. SO excited. We own a home. And now we have to clean and paint and do all kinds of work to it…. Yeesh. BUT WE’RE HOMEOWNERS!
